John served his apprenticeship in precision engineering during which he attended technical college finishing his time in the drawing office. Soon after, he moved on to work in production design involving assembly jigs and fixtures. He then moved to Germany initially as a design engineer working on avionic test rigs. After this he worked as a general manager for a sub-contract design company prior to acting as an engineering consultant to a software company.
Upon returning to the UK in 1986 he worked briefly as a consultant before setting up Grafton Technology to support the space sector.
